PLANT OF THE MONTH - March
Scilla sibirica (Latin)
Common Name: Spring squill
This is a bulb with dainty blue flowers at this time of year. You need to plant them in mass to achieve much of an effect in the first place, but if they like where you have put them, they will multiply and fill the space. They look particularly good under fruit trees. The word "sibirica" means Siberian, and as you might expect from that,
they are very cold hardy.
There are some named forms. They all seem to be a lovely sky blue colour, which is an absolute joy
to behold, when out in the garden on these early spring days. They will do OK in quite heavy shade,
and the foliage does not take too long to die down, so you can start mowing fairly soon.
